Materials and quality

Here is exactly what a HoneyLamp is made of, how it is built and what the markings actually mean.

The material

PLA-based bioplastic.

The shade is built in PLA – a plastic made from renewable raw materials, in practice corn and sugarcane, rather than fossil oil.

PLA is a bio-based material. We do not claim that a HoneyLamp breaks down in nature: PLA needs industrial composting conditions to degrade, and we have no documentation showing otherwise for a finished product with wood and electrical components. The material was chosen because the raw material is renewable, not because the lamp is meant to be thrown away.

The surface has a fine, tactile texture that comes from the lamp being built layer by layer. It is meant to be felt – that is part of the look.

Wood

Wood in the top and suspension.

The top piece and suspension are in wood. That gives the lamp weight in its look and a warm transition towards the ceiling or the tabletop.

Wood is a living material. Shade and grain vary from lamp to lamp – no two are ever quite alike.

Electrical

Italian electrical components.

The socket, cord and suspension are Italian electrical components, chosen for durability and a clean look.

Every HoneyLamp uses an E27 socket and 230 V. The pendants take a maximum of 15 W LED, the table lamp 20 W LED. The bulb is not included, so you can choose the colour temperature yourself – we recommend 2200–2700 K to bring out the honey tone.

The lamps are dimmable as long as you use a dimmable LED bulb and a dimmer rated for LED. There is no dimmer built into the lamp.

Markings

What CE, RoHS and IP20 mean.

CE is a conformity mark. It means the product is declared to meet the applicable requirements in relevant EU regulation. It is not an award for quality, a test passed by a third party, or a guarantee of lifespan.

RoHS covers the restriction of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The table lamp is marked CE and RoHS.

IP20 is the IP rating. It means protection against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm, but no protection against water. HoneyLamp must therefore only be used in dry indoor rooms – not in bathrooms, utility rooms or outdoors.
